EMDR ~ eye movement desensitization & reprocessing
EMDR
is an exciting and relatively recent development in psychotherapy,
and has been found in numerous research studies to be quickly and
deeply effective in helping relieve traumatic activation and
EMDR seems to help people get free from the cycle of re-activation (reliving the felt experience of a trauma or very distressing experience as if it were timeless), thus enabling them to relate to old disturbing memories with greater perspective and less charge. I like to think of EMDR as helping clear out the tangles and old knots in one's memory channels to relieve present-day distress or symptoms. It can work when there is a specific memory, and also when there is not. Many distressing symptoms, such as phobias, some anxiety, "inexplicable" health concerns, situational reactivity, and others, may have origins in events of the past and can be resolved with EMDR. Generally what happens is that previously disturbing memories or situations no longer feel so overwhelming or distressing. A greater sense of perspective is gained, which often includes an enhanced sense of self-esteem and competency.
